Our Portuguese volunteer Eduardo Cardoso completed his 9-month service in India within our European Solidarity Corps, Humanitarian Aid project “HAND”, funded by the European Commission, coordinated by us, supported by our Irish partner Viatores Christi Company Limited by Guarantee (VC) and hosted by our Indian partner Orissa State Volunteers and Social Workers Association (OSVSWA).
He supported OSVSWA in managing the Comprehensive Rice Fallow Management Programme and then co-created, together with Yunes Abou El Wafa, SAFER Odisha – Securing Agriculture from Environmental Risks, an initiative aimed at developing climate change adaptation plans in rural Odisha through a Community-Based Approach. Overall, most of his work was dedicated to the creation and implementation of SAFER’s activities in the pilot area of Kakatpur Block, developing an Adaptation Roadmap for three villages and designing advocacy and monitoring actions.
The impact of SAFER Odisha resulted in bridging the gap between the rural communities of Kakatpur and the planning and monitoring actions by state agricultural and environmental authorities. The project engaged with more than 300 farmers, allowing them to design their action plans to reduce the vulnerability of their agriculture and livelihoods to the impacts of climate change. His work ensured that, after years, these communities had the opportunity to be heard by the governmental institutions of Odisha.
He was instrumental since the creation and implementation of all SAFER Odisha activities depended on his co-leadership with Yunes Abou El Wafa. He developed his technical and theoretical capacities in climate change adaptation, improved his project management skills, and learned how to cope with the challenges related to multicultural work environments and communication barriers within his activity in India. We would like to thank Eduardo very much for his outstanding efforts throughout his activity.
