Our Portuguese volunteer Shana Ferreira completed her 8-month service in Uganda within our European Solidarity Corps, Humanitarian Aid project “HAND”, funded by the European Commission, coordinated by us, supported by our Irish partner Viatores Christi Company Limited by Guarantee (VC) and hosted by the Uganda Office of Viatores Christi Company Limited by Guarantee (VC).
Shana taught in St. Noa Primary school. She prepared the material and the activities for the English lesson and gave the English lessons by herself. She also helped the PE teacher with his PE lesson and she participated in the lessons as well. She also taught cultural exchanges. She taught Portuguese to the learners, and they taught her Luganda in return. She played word games with them. In the cultural exchange lesson, she learned some cultural traditions. She also spent some of the days in the office helping in the Education Department with the organization of the data and preparing the presentation of the Child Safeguarding Policy that she presented later in two different meetings to the head teachers and priests in charge of the different schools.
With her activity, Shana learned to plan, prepare and give a lesson. As a consequence of this work, she also developed her oratory skills. Personally, she grew a lot during the 8 months that she was in Uganda. She learned to adapt to a new culture and their way of living, to deal with some situations by herself and it helped her confidence and developed her English skills. We thank Shana very much for all her devoted work.
