Giordana’s STARRY Journey Begins in Zanzibar!
We are happy to share that Giordana Gallina from Italy has safely arrived in Zanzibar, Tanzania, where she has begun her 300-day Humanitarian Aid Volunteering activity within our STARRY – Solidarity Targeted Activities Run by Rising Youth project, coordinated by EPEKA under the European Solidarity Corps Humanitarian Aid programme. ❤️
Giordana will carry out her volunteering activity from 5 October 2026 to 1 August 2027 with our hosting partner, Assalam Community Foundation (ACF), based in Kizimkazi Mkunguni, Zanzibar.
About Assalam Community Foundation
ACF works around the concept of PEACE — Permaculture, Education, Art & Culture, Community and Empowerment. Through these interconnected areas, the organisation supports sustainability, resilience and social justice, with a particular focus on creating opportunities for children, young people, women and vulnerable communities in Zanzibar. Its work includes education, permaculture and sustainable agriculture, community development, skills development and initiatives supporting economic empowerment.
During the coming months, Giordana will contribute to a wide range of activities at Assalam International School, the Vocational Training Center, the Youth Center (Africamp) and Children University. Her tasks may include supporting educational and creative activities for children, assisting vocational training programmes for women, teaching basic English, facilitating youth camps and workshops, and contributing to community activities.
Her volunteering journey will also extend beyond the ACF campus through outreach and permaculture activities. Together with the local team, she may visit schools and villages across Zanzibar, organise educational activities in science, art and sports, support permaculture education, take part in tree planting and beach clean-ups, and contribute to sustainable agriculture and other community-based initiatives.
This long-term experience will be not only about contributing, but also about learning, cultural exchange and growing together with the local community. Along the way, Giordana will have opportunities to develop her skills in teaching, facilitation, leadership, intercultural communication, sustainable agriculture and community development.
Welcome to STARRY, Giordana!
We wish you an inspiring, meaningful and unforgettable 300 days in Zanzibar. May this journey bring new friendships, new perspectives, plenty of learning and many small actions that create lasting change. ❤️
A big thank you to our partner Assalam Community Foundation for welcoming Giordana and accompanying her throughout this new chapter of her STARRY journey.
Karibu Zanzibar, Giordana! ❤️
