As part of our ESC Humanitarian Aid project “STARRY”, funded by the European Commission, Lidia Rodriguez from Spain joined a volunteering experience in Zanzibar. Sent by Asociacion Building Bridges and hosted by Assalam Community Foundation, Lidia became part of an international team working within a multicultural and community-oriented environment.
During her time in Zanzibar, Lidia had the opportunity to observe and learn about the daily functioning of community-based projects and local initiatives. Through this experience, she gained valuable insights into humanitarian and community work while becoming familiar with the realities and dynamics of local development activities.
Lidia also provided support whenever assistance was needed, contributing to various tasks and activities and demonstrating flexibility and willingness to help. Her participation in community events allowed her to engage with local people, experience the rich culture of Zanzibar, and better understand the importance of solidarity and social engagement.
An important aspect of her experience was the opportunity to collaborate and exchange ideas with volunteers from different countries and cultural backgrounds. Through informal teamwork and daily interactions, she strengthened her intercultural communication skills, built new friendships, and shared experiences with fellow volunteers united by a common commitment to making a positive contribution.
Volunteering abroad is not only about the activities carried out, but also about personal growth, cultural exchange, and learning from new environments. Lidia’s experience in Zanzibar provided her with the opportunity to broaden her perspectives, develop new skills, and become part of an international network of active and engaged young people.
